The Pilot Plant of Fine Chemicals is a research centre conceived to stimulate University-Enterprise collaboration, promoting the integration of new “clean” technologies to the Chemo-Pharmaceutical and related industrial sectors.
VISION
At the beginning of XXIst century, the Chemo-Pharmaceutical industrial sector, one of the more innovatives in world economy, is making use, to maintain is technological effort, of two combined strategies:
-
Increase of collaboration with the academic researchers, as a way to quickly incorporate new concepts to their productive schemes
-
Outsourcing of R&D services in specialised centres, to keep costs at a reasonable level, and to reduce development periods of the new products and processes.
Due to the important industrial network existent in the country and in Madrid environment, the PPQF is becoming increasingly specialised in the implementation of new technologies, paying special attention to meted of low environmental impact –what we call today “Green Chemistry”-. In its neighbourhood, apart from its own resources, the centre is supported by the human resources and research infrastructure of the University of Alcalá.

TARGETS
As specific targets, the PPQF is directed to the following ones:
-
Realization of cooperative research and development projects with enterprises and institutions.
-
Encouragement of enterprise innovation, through the corresponding technology transfer actions.
-
Provide technological services to enterprises, facilitating outsourcing of R&D areas.
-
Training of personnel in new production technologies, in the areas covered by the PPQF.
The project of the Pilot Plant Facility of Fine Chemicals (PPQF) was developed though the period 1990-92, implying researchers of the Departments of Organic Chemistry - coord. Prof. J. Alvarez-Builla-, Analytical Chemistry and Chemical Engineering -coords. Profs. E. Domínguez Cañas y E. García Calvo- and Microbiology -coord. Prof. F. Laborda- of the University of Alcalá, in collaboration with the Office of Technology Transfer (OTRI) of the University.
The building, with more than 3000 m 2 , was designed by the Technical Office of the University of Alcalá, and was built by LAIN S.A.
In response to the present demand, after its inauguration in 1998, the PPQF has developed projects and services according to the following modalities:
-
Synthesis of new products of therapeutical interest.
-
Improved syntheses for the production of Generic Drugs.
-
Synthesis of non commercial products and intermediates in Kilolab scale (50 g-1 Kg).
-
Synthesis of pilot batches for preclinical use of drugs in development (1-50 Kg).
-
Detection and identification of trace contaminants in pharmaceutical products.
-
Research and Development of new polymers.
-
Development and validation of new analytical methods.
-
Analysis of new products and materials, specially related with environmental contro
